Academics
GLI Boulder will foster an academically rigorous environment while simultaneously promoting true cultural immersion. It will provide a comprehensive and interactive program in which international scholars cultivate their leadership and communication skills both inside and outside of the classroom.
GLI Boulder is a fully accredited institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder. All students who complete the program will receive 7 upper division credits from the University and an official transcript.
Classes will be held for four hours daily, with a break for lunch. Along with traditional classroom lecture, classes will consist of small group recitations, field trips, and presentations from local leaders and the students themselves.
"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."
- Albert Einstein-
Classes
GLI will offer two mandatory classes focused on leadership, international relations, project development, and transformational action. The first half of the program will be dedicated to Global Issues in Leadership. This class will examine issues that affect the global community and the communities we live in. The class will be focused on debate and will study issues in the countries that the scholars are coming from. Imagine learning about the Kashmir incident from a scholar who lives there, or debating US foreign policy with people who have lived through its interventions. The goal of this class is to offer each scholar a global perspective, a true understanding of real world issues and implications, and to develop a realization of the need for change.
The goal of the second class is in its title; to Change the World. This two-week course will be dedicated to funneling the scholars' passion and ability and giving them the tools to create real world change. This class will transcend the classroom by giving each scholar the skills to create progressive change and will invariably challenge them to do so. Lectures on grant writing, workshops on where to apply for funding, and the creation of a fully realized project proposal to change the world are what makes this class stand out.
PRLC 3810 Global Issues in Leadership: Examines the challenges
to leadership posed by major global issues. Problems in the areas of human
rights, hunger, disease, large-scale collective violence, and environmental
deterioration are explored with a special emphasis on the development of
effective, long-term leadership strategies.
PRLC 4010 21st Century Leadership/Capstone Course: Teaches the students how to
transform their passions into progressive world change. This class will focus on
the principles of Transformative Action, as well as providing the necessary
skills for scholars to make their dreams a reality.
This course is offered by the Division of Continuing Education as part of the
Statewide Extended Studies Program.
Grants
Our mission at GLI Boulder is to make the theoretical real. In and outside of the classroom scholars will develop the tools and skills necessary to create progressive change in our world. But we don't stop there. At the completion of the program each scholar will submit a grant proposal to the Transformative Action Institute and will have the opportunity to compete for $50,000 USD grants!
Speakers
Leaders in business, education, media, social work, politics and community will speak to scholars about leadership and progressive action. These lectures are designed to allow the scholars to gain insight and ideas from experienced leaders and professionals.
